A Lee's Summit couple wants to warn others to do some homework when buying off Craigslist after they were taken for almost $10,000.VIDEOKMBC's Scott McDonnell reported that the couple did many things you're supposed to do when buying a car on Craigslist. They met in a public place and made sure there were cameras and people around. But there were some things they didn't do."We sold our nicest vehicle that we had, that we didn't owe any money on, so we could liquidate because I've been off work three months," said Debra Isabell.Isabell and her husband found what they thought would be the perfect vehicle on Craigslist."It said low miles, one owner, exclamation point 66,000 miles," Isabell said. The next day they met to buy the car. The title was open, signed with a woman's name , but not filled out."He said, 'Well, my wife was at work. I got her to sign it yesterday,'" Isabell said.Against a gut instinct they laid out $9,400 in cash. After bringing the car home, they decided to button up the title issue."I texted the same number -- no response," Isabell said. She said she looked up the original name on the title and learned the owner had sold it over a month ago."He said, 'You don't want to know.' Then he told us that (the man) had paid $3,900 for it," Isabell said. The Isabells paid twice that much. Then they looked up the vehicle on Carfax."It confirmed to me that I had been scammed," she said. The odometer did not match up. The ad said 66,000 miles, but it had 226,000 miles on it.The couple said they have no choice but to keep the vehicle and pass on the lesson to inform others. In hindsight, the couple said they wished they had gotten the vehicle identification number to look up its history on Carfax.
