History is within reach for Liga MX’s Club Leon. After waltzing through the 2021 Leagues Cup quarterfinal and semifinal stages with ease, Leon are now tantalizingly close to lifting their first-ever international trophy.
Holan took over León in May of this year after a short stint with Santos FC in Brazil. The 61-year-old began his managerial career late, getting his first head coaching opportunity in 2015 with Defensa y Justicia in his native Argentina. He began his career coaching field hockey before switching to soccer in in the early 2000s.
Next Wednesday, the Seattle Sounders will square off against Liga MX giants Club León (7:00 p.m. PT; ESPN2, TUDN, UniMás) in the 2021 Leagues Cup Final at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nev. with a trophy on the line. León advanced to the final by dismantling Sporting Kansas City 6-1 in the quarterfinals before beating fellow Mexican side Pumas UNAM 2-0 in the other semifinal on Wednesday night. They currently sit third in the Liga MX Apertura season, five points shy of league-leaders Club América with eight matches played.
September 23 – The second and last of North America’s Leagues Cup in its current format – an eight-team competition between the top MLS and LigaMX clubs – was played out last night in the Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.
