Many port operations rely on fossil fuel or diesel to power ships, trucks, and other transportation. Since the implementation of the Clean Air Action Plan of 2006, particulate matter (PM) from these operations has dropped by 87%, while nitrogen oxides, an important precursor pollutant to ozone, are down 58%. Still, the ports remain a significant pollution source, producing an estimated 100 tons of smog daily, with little year-over-year improvement since 2011. The Los Angeles air pollution map often reveals higher AQI in Los Angeles’s port areas. Port authorities are looking for new ways to further decrease these emissions, such as investing cleaner energy transport vehicles.

Moskowitz said he envisioned creating a “one-stop shop” app where people could find the most relevant information from South Coast AQMD. He wanted both the iOS and Android versions to be visually pleasing with maps and other indicators that display air quality data and alternative fuel station locations. In addition, Moskowitz thought the app should be easy to navigate and provide people with a way to connect with South Coast AQMD either by reporting air quality issues using the 1-800-CUT-SMOG number or finding the times and locations of South Coast AQMD meetings they could attend. The top panel shows the forecast for the Common Air Quality Index (CAQI) used in Europe since 2006. It is a number on a scale from 1 to 100, where a low value (green colors) means good air quality and a high value (red colors) means bad air quality. CAQI colour-coding is used in all air pollution forecast panels of the meteogram to indicate the level of pollution. For the pollen forecast there are no official guidelines for color-coding, as pollen are not part of the Air Quality Index forecast. The Air Quality index is defined separately near roads (“roadside” index) or away from roads ("background" index). meteoblue uses the background index, because weather models can not reproduce small-scale differences along the roads. Therefore, measurements along roads will show higher values than forecast here.
