From his first pull-up, Aaron’s basketball glory would not be denied.
Otterbein University Theatre Department [@otterbeintheatr] (October 3, 2017). "October 3rd is known as "Mean Girls Day," but did you know that @JonathanBennett aka Aaron Samuels was a former Otterbein student? Grool!" (Tweet) – via Twitter.
"Jonathan Bennett, who attended Otterbein (pictured on the far left) and played Aaron Samuels in "Mean Girls," was announced as one of 13 celebrity dancers on Season 19 of Dancing with the Stars". Otterbein University Alumni Facebook page. September 4, 2014. (Source: en.wikipedia.org)
But what happens before that kiss in Mean Girls the musical, now playing at the August Wilson Theatre, is more about Cady’s path to realizing that she doesn’t have to be plastic to be cool. And in this version, Aaron is much more than the cute, nice boy from math class. He lives outside of the school district and uses a fake address to attend his high school, a detail that lands him in the Burn Book among all the girls in the school. In turn, Cady’s relationship with Aaron isn’t the whole focus of the show; it’s just part of it. Cady and Aaron kiss at the school dance, but as far as after high school? The audience doesn’t get answers.
When Jonathan Bennett booked the role of teen hunk Aaron Samuels, he had been out of high school for nearly five years and was playing a character who was pretty much his alter ego. "I grew up a theater nerd and a drama club nerd, and here I am getting to play, like, what I always wanted to be, which is like the cool jock guy," he admitted on the Today show. Erika Henningsen: There’s a line that [Aaron says] in the movie that didn’t make it in the play, but it defines what this is about: “There’s good and bad in everybody; some people are just more up-front about it.” And I think that’s the message that Regina gives Cady at the end: you don’t have to apologize for you who you are, as long as it’s not undercutting anybody else. And I think that’s why Aaron’s attracted to [Regina], and why he ultimately finds his way back to Cady when she sort of owns her individuality and her weirdness and she doesn’t apologize for it.
"I guess it was the first time somebody pointed to me on the street and shouted 'You go Glenn Coco!' that I knew I was involved in something with a beauty and power that surpassed the mere proliferation of four candy canes to an accidental movie extra," he said. (Source: www.insider.com)
