Mandatory 10-Digit Dialing Starts Next Month in 812 Area Code

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- If you live or work in southern Indiana, you will soon have to dial the 812 area code from any phone, even if you're placing the call from within the area code. (Source: www.wdrb.com)

Area code 812 was one of the original NANP area codes introduced in 1947. Despite the presence of Evansville, Terre Haute and Bloomington, southern Indiana is not as densely populated as the rest of the state. As a result, this configuration remained in place for more than six decades, making 812 one of the few original area codes (not counting those covering an entire state) that still had its original boundaries. (Source: en.wikipedia.org)

The overlay has been the primary method of implementing new area codes since 2005 and the only method used in the United States since 2008. With this method, a new area code "overlays" the entire geographic area covered by the existing area code. Existing phones and devices retain current area codes and phone numbers, but new phones and telecommunications devices may be assigned numbers using the new area code. An overlay does not change the boundaries of a consumer’s free local calling area, but all calls - including free local calls - usually require 10-digit dialing. (Source: www.in.gov)

To ensure a continuing supply of telephone numbers, the new 930 area code will be added this year to the 812 region which generally covers the southern third of Indiana including Bloomington, Columbus, Evansville, New Albany, and Terre Haute. The new 930 area code will be “overlaid” or superimposed over the same geographical area as 812. (Source: www.wdrb.com)

The numbering plan area (NPA) includes Evansville and most of its suburbs, the Indiana portions of the Louisville and Cincinnati metropolitan areas, and the cities of Bedford, Bloomington, Columbus, Greensburg, Jasper, Princeton, Seymour, Terre Haute, and Vincennes. The NPA also serves a small section of Kentucky located adjacent to Evansville and north of the Ohio River whose most notable landmark is Ellis Park Race Course, a Thoroughbred horse racing track. INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Telephone users in southern Indiana's 812 area code should dial 10 numbers beginning Saturday. (Source: www.wave3.com State officials are instructing them to include the area code any time they make a phone call, not just on calls to different area codes. Local calls without the area code will still work until early September to give people adequate time to adjust to the change. (Source:www.wave3.com))

The Indiana Office of Utility Consumer Counselor says the change is necessary for the introduction of the new 930 area code this fall. (Source: www.wave3.com The 930 area code is being introduced because all possible numbers for 812 will be exhausted in 2015. (Source:www.wave3.com))
