Is Your Area Code 562, 626, 949 or 951? This Announcement Is for You

That’s your area code plus the phone number and that's even if you are just calling your next door neighbor. The change went into effect today (aka Sunday, Oct. 24). (Source: laist.com 562 was originally meant to be an overlay code exclusively for cellular telephones and pagers for existing 310 area code customers in late 1995. However, the overlay (and all others in CA since 2008) was cancelled after cellular companies sued the California Public Utilities Commission to prevent a repeat of a similar split in New York City, where all 212 & 718 mobile customers were changed over to a new 917 NPA. Cellular technology was relatively new, and the industry argued that separate area codes for cellular customers created a stigma and would hurt sales as people wanted their home and cell phone numbers to be in the same area code. After years in court, the CPUC sided with the cellular industry, and so plans were made to split 310 instead. (Source:en.wikipedia.org))

LONG BEACH (CBSLA) — Making a phone call? If your phone number starts with 562, 626, 949, or 951, you will have to dial the full 10-digits to make a call, even if you are calling someone within your own area code. (Source: losangeles.cbslocal.com These area codes were impacted because they have working 988 prefix phone numbers. Long Beach officials say the change requires mandatory 10-digit dialing for all local calls made from mobile phones, and 11-digit local dialing from landlines and wirelines.
