In March 2014, Todd Chrisley unveiled his luxurious Atlanta home and gave viewers a rare glimpse of his family. The flamboyant patriarch boasted about their spending on clothes and other luxury items with abandon.
But less than a decade later, he and Julie Chrisley were found guilty of multiple federal crimes for defrauding banks and evading taxes to fund their extravagant lifestyle. Now they face prison sentences.
Todd and Julie Chrisley made millions from their reality show, yet concealed their wealth from the IRS, according to prosecutors. Prosecutors allege they submitted falsified documents to obtain bank loans and used a production company to hide income sources, according to the Justice Department.
Prosecutors allege the couple also defrauded creditors, such as service workers and a contractor for work done on their house, of money they received. Court documents indicate they spent it on luxury cars, real estate investments and other items without accounting for debt owed.
Federal prosecutors wanted Todd Chrisley to serve 17 to 21 years in prison, while Julie Chrisley faced 10 to 12 years based on sentencing guidelines. But their attorneys asked the judge to reduce their sentences so they could care for their children and Julie's ailing mother, according to lawyer Alex Little's account to ABC News.
Prosecutors asserted that Todd and Julie were motivated by greed when they engaged in a tax-evasion scheme. They used fake bank statements, audit reports and personal financial statements to defraud banks in the Atlanta area of more than $36 million in personal loans, according to prosecutors.
According to the prosecution, Chrisleys operated a loan-out company with Peter Tarantino as their accountant, falsely claiming it earned no money or made no distributions. Furthermore, they used a production company to hide their income from IRS audits.
In June, a federal jury found the Chrisleys guilty of tax fraud and bank fraud for their roles in the scam. Furthermore, they were found guilty of conspiracy to defraud the IRS as well.
According to CBS News, Todd Chrisley was sentenced to 12 years in prison and Julie to seven. Additionally, Ross ordered the couple to pay restitution.
In August 2019, The Chrisleys were indicted on charges of tax evasion, bank fraud, wire fraud and conspiracy to commit those crimes. Furthermore, they were accused of concealing millions of dollars earned from their show and other business ventures.
In June, the Chrisleys were found guilty of all charges and are scheduled for sentencing hearing on November 21, according to ABC News. Their lawyers request a lighter sentence so they can continue working while serving time in prison. Furthermore, they would like the judge to consider staggered sentences so their youngest daughter can finish school before 18 or so years old.
What occurred when Todd and Julie Chrisley were found guilty of conspiring to defraud community banks?
At trial, it became evident that the reality TV stars had a troubled financial past. Prosecutors allege they obtained millions of dollars in fraudulent loans by fabricating false statements and audit reports with help from their former business partner. The couple used these funds for luxury cars, designer clothing, real estate purchases and travel - with new loans used to pay off old ones as well, according to prosecutors.
Prosecutors reported the chrisleys also submitted false documents to a grand jury investigating their crimes in 2014. In 2014, while Todd Chrisley was in bankruptcy proceedings, Julie created false documents in order to rent a home in Los Angeles. Once there, however, they failed to pay rent and the property owner filed an eviction lawsuit against them.
They were found guilty of filing false tax returns on behalf of their company, Chrisley Media Group LLC, and evading taxes on their income. Peter Tarantino - the chrisleys' accountant - was also found guilty of these crimes.
Federal prosecutors had recommended that Todd and Julie receive 17 1/2 to 22 years in prison for their crimes. But their lawyers maintained the prosecutors were wrong in recommending such a long sentence, and instead requested the judge grant them probation, community service and restitution.
Todd and Julie Chrisley have been imprisoned since their convictions on January 16. They are currently serving their sentences at the Federal Correctional Institution (FCI) Pensacola, Florida; and the Federal Medical Center Lexington, Kentucky.
Their legal counsel states they have been trying to stay out of the spotlight and avoid their children. Lindsie and Savannah live with their mother in Nashville, Tennessee.
No matter their struggles, they remain faithful to God and refuse to lose hope. They draw inspiration from Job in the Bible who endured great trials yet was able to maintain his faith throughout them.
Due to their criminal charges, both of Chrisley Knows Best's unscripted reality shows were cancelled. Some episodes of Chrisley Knows Best will air on USA Network in the future, and Growing Up Chrisley is set for its 10th season next year; however, both are currently on hiatus.
After being found guilty of bank fraud and tax evasion, the Chrisleys found themselves back in the spotlight. They became stars of USA Network's eponymous reality series that chronicles their family life in Nashville.
Todd and Julie Chrisley were found guilty in June 2022 of multiple counts of bank fraud, conspiracy to commit tax evasion, and obstruction of justice. During their trial, it was alleged that they submitted false documents to banks in order to obtain more than $30 million in personal loans. Furthermore, the Chrisleys were accused of concealing money from the IRS while using their production company for defrauding the government.
Todd Chrisley was given 12 years in prison, while his wife Julie received seven. Both were also ordered to serve three years of supervised release and pay restitution that will be determined later.
They had to notify probation officers and location monitors whenever they left home for work, medical appointments or court appearances. Furthermore, they needed to notify their probation officer if they spent more than $1,000.
The couple's legal team filed several papers in an effort to reduce their sentences. One paper requested the judge reduce their punishment so they could care for their children and ailing mother who has Alzheimer's disease. Another attorney proposed a sentence consisting of probation, restitution and community service in order to keep the Chrisleys out of jail.
Prosecutors ultimately recommended prison sentences for both Chrisleys, based on sentencing guidelines which suggested a range of 22 to 21 years for each.
Lawyers for the Chrisleys disagreed with the government's calculations and maintained that neither should serve more than nine years in prison. They wrote that there was insufficient proof to prove their definite intent to defraud banks, as well as an error in prosecutor's estimates of loss amounts.
They also requested a sentence including probation and restitution to be recorded on their records, so they can appeal in the future. Unfortunately, in June 2013, the Chrisleys were found guilty on all counts.
In June, the Chrisleys were found guilty of fraud. After a three-week trial in Atlanta, they were found guilty of tax evasion and bank fraud.
Federal prosecutors allege the Chrisleys took out fraudulent bank loans to fund their lifestyle, which they promised would be paid back with interest. Furthermore, they concealed earnings from their reality TV show from the IRS, according to prosecutors. Their accountant Peter Tarantino was found guilty of filing false tax returns on their behalf and Julie Chrisley was found guilty of wire fraud and obstruction of justice.
Prosecutors allege the couple and their accountant used a loan-out company to hide money from the IRS. Julie Chrisley kept the corporate bank accounts for the business in her name, then transferred ownership to someone close to her, all with the purpose of concealing income. Furthermore, Todd Chrisley failed to file tax returns or pay taxes for several years even though he claimed on radio that he paid between $750,000 and $1 million in federal income taxes.
In June, the Chrisleys were found guilty of conspiracy to commit bank fraud, bank fraud, tax fraud and wire fraud. Todd Chrisley received a sentence of 12 years in prison while his wife Julie Chrisley received seven years.
Prosecutors allege the couple inflate their net worth and obtain false tax returns to deceive community banks into issuing fraudulent loans. Furthermore, they lied when applying for loans, providing false credit reports and bank statements. Moreover, Merrill Lynch, a major bank, was instructed to set up an escrow account in order to cover a debt owed.
The attorneys for Todd and Julie Chrisley disagreed with the government's sentencing guidelines and called for prison sentences that fell below them. Furthermore, they claimed that the amount of loss, restitution and forfeiture had been grossly overstated and neither Todd nor Julie Chrisley "purposely sought to inflict harm upon the banks," according to Associated Press reporting.
Attorneys for the Chrisleys wrote that they were not involved in obtaining their loans and did not "purposefully or willfully knowingly" commit tax evasion or fraud. Furthermore, they cited their "extraordinary family obligations," such as three children and full custody of Todd Chrisley's 10-year-old daughter.

Even after their brief marriage, Hemsworth and Cyrus still managed to spend a lot of time together. They visited Hemsworth's family in Australia as well as spending time at his Malibu house.
