Point Mugu State Park

Point Mugu State Park, situated within the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area, is an idyllic destination to visit. With five miles of ocean shoreline and rugged hills and uplands, two major river canyons, as well as wide grassy valleys dotted with sycamores, oaks and native walnut trees; Point Mugu also provides swimming, body surfing and surf fishing opportunities while its jagged pinnacles form part of Boney Mountain Wilderness Area.

From the south, access the park by turning off of Pacific Coast Highway at Sycamore Canyon Campground. Here, you can reach a range station for Malibu operations, La Jolla Canyon Trailhead and camping locations, or Chumash Trailhead at Mugu beach just below Point Mugu on the right-hand side of PCH. In addition, there are 62 primitive campsites along Thornhill Broome Beach (formerly La Jolla Beach)'s edge.

One of the most popular trails in Point Mugu State Park is Sycamore Canyon Trail. Climbing along its canyon walls among many old sycamores offers some stunning views and should not be disturbed as hawks and owls roost high up.

Another fantastic hike is the Sycamore Cove Loop, which connects the Backbone Trail to Sycamore Canyon Loop and explores some inland areas of the park. This route is perfect for families with younger children or those who don't want to venture as far as Mugu Peak hike.

For something more adventurous, you can also hike up to Mugu Peak from La Jolla Canyon Trailhead. However, be warned: the 6.5 mile round-trip climb to the summit is steep and exposed to sunlight so be sure to bring plenty of water and sunscreen with you.

On the west side of Thornhill Broome Park, there is a walk-in group campground with up to 12 vehicles that can accommodate guests. Amenities like restrooms, picnic tables and fire rings are available at this site; reservations must be made up to six months in advance of your arrival date.
