hot new hip hop mixtapes 2023

Hot New Hip Hop Mixtapes 2023

Mixtapes aren’t new to the world of music, but they are an increasingly effective way to elevate your profile as an artist. The buzz surrounding them also means that they can be a great way to get the word out about new releases.

This year has seen the release of a plethora of mixtapes by hip hop artists, and we’ve compiled a list of hot new ones. Check them out!

1. GodDon’tF%kWitU

GodDon’tF%kWitU is a solid release from Da Buze Bruvaz and Him Lo, with rugged beats from Wino Willy. This is Him Lo’s best work yet, his raw rhyme style and hard-hitting bars perfectly complemented by Wino Willy’s rugged production – this is some solid underground Hip Hop.

The Great Lakes Collective is a three-man crew from Cleveland, Ohio, making early 90s-style Hip Hop. They have a nice energy here that gives this project some credibility, with Bizzy Bone and Layzie Bone from Bone Thugs N Harmony providing an extra layer of intrigue.

Detroit emcee Ty Farris dropped one of the best left-field Hip Hop albums of 2022 last year with Welcome 2 Room 39, and he delivered another quality project this year too. Slick boom-bap beats, smooth flows and entertaining content - it's on par with his excellent No Cosign Just Cocaine series.

Stalley’s “Somebody...” found the Ohio emcee drawing on his own experiences to encourage and motivate others, delivering his verses with an endearing warmth and a laidback openness that was complimented by smooth, hypnotic production from Black Diamond, MadKeys, Namir Blade and others.

If you grew-up in the 80s and tuned into Mike Allen’s weekly Hip Hop show on Capital Radio then you’ll appreciate DJ Nappa’s instrumental release that pays homage to his show’s retro feel. It’s a fantastic blast from the past that’ll have you rewinding back to your youthful days when Hip Hop was just so exciting and fresh.

Your Old Droog may be a little too polished and mainstream-oriented for some Hip Hop traditionalists, but his The D4Tour is an enjoyable fusion of alternative underground rap and easy-listening instrumentals. His lyrical flow is really varied over the 20 tracks, switching from spitting bars to emo-rapping to singing - and it all works.

He’s also a member of alt-Hip Hop duo The Difference Machine, and their Unmasking the Spirit Fakers album was one of the best left-field Hip Hop releases of 2022. Their new What A Time To Be DEAD is just as good, with psychedelic instrumentals that add depth to the stream-of-consciousness rapping from Day Tripper.

2. Kasan

We’re in the middle of a huge release cycle for Hip Hop mixtapes, with 2023 already bringing new music from Yung Kayo, Mach-Hommy, $not and more. This is a great time to check out fresh underground Hip Hop - but with so many hot new releases coming out, it can be difficult to keep track of them all. That’s why we’re compiling this list to help you out!

Kasan is a joint project from California-based emcee Memphis Reigns and producer D - Mitch. The album is a bit of a crossover project at times, and D-Mitch’s guitar play helps to give it a rock vibe. But the content is solid enough to make it a must-listen.

The Phantom Of The Corner Store is an impressive mixtape from a relatively unknown artist. The album is made up of strong, atmospheric boom-bap beats and psychedelic instrumentals that are all delivered in an unorthodox way. The tracks are layered to a degree that you will need to put your headphones on and listen carefully, but the result is a highly enjoyable mixtape with some of the best underground Hip Hop of the year so far.

GodDon’tF%kWitU is Him Lo of Da Buze Bruvaz’s best record yet, and a great example of the type of raw, hard-hitting Hip Hop that is so often missing from today’s mainstream. Wino Willy’s rugged beats and Him Lo’s hard-hitting bars come together to create some very dope underground Hip Hop - it is well worth a listen.

Day Tripper is a rapper from Atlanta, active as a solo artist and as half of the alt-Hip Hop duo The Difference Machine. His What A Time To Be DEAD is another strong entry from his impressive discography. The album isn’t as dense or hard-edged as last year’s The Difference Machine album, but the psychedelic instrumentals are just as engaging - this is some of the strongest grimy underground Hip Hop you’ll hear in 2023.

Mickey Blue is a NYC-based producer whose A Long Time Coming is a great representation of the authentic boom-bap sound. It’s full of obscure samples, bass-filled beats and razor-sharp cuts, but it also features veteran wordsmiths who deliver lyrical knockout blows throughout. It’s a compelling album - one that will appeal to Hip Hop traditionalists in particular.

3. The Phantom Of The Corner Store

One of the most successful musicals of all time, The Phantom of the Opera, has been around for over 30 years and continues to be one of Broadway’s longest running shows. It has been a huge inspiration for some of the best and brightest in the business, including a recent remix showcasing vocals from current West End leads Killian Donnelly and Lucy St. Louis ably assisted by the legendary Spanish DJ and Producer Supermini.

The Phantom of the Corner Store is a well put together and thoroughly engrossing affair. Featuring an impressive 19 tracks of music, the mix was recorded in a single take on an A/B mic and the results are as good as they sound. A definite must have for any Hip Hop lover. It also makes a fine addition to any ol’ record collection. It was a difficult choice to pick a winner, but in the end it had to be this record. The best way to get your paws on it is via a download from the Rostrum Records label. Alternatively you can stream it on your phone. The best part is it’s completely free to download.

4. The Wager

In 2023, expect to see a number of hot new hip hop mixtapes released. The year will bring the re-release of classic albums, as well as some exciting new music from up and coming artists.

Him Lo of Da Buze Bruvaz is set to release his best album yet, GodDon’tF%kWitU - and it's set to be a dope rap classic with rugged beats from producer Wino Willy. It's a perfect fit for Him Lo's raw rhyme style and his hard-hitting bars.

This is another one of those gems that you'll only get if you go in early and download it before it gets taken off the internet - and I promise, you won't regret it. If you're into underground Hip Hop, this is a must-have - and the beats are as dope as they come.

The album is full of strong bars and beats from the likes of C-Jillz, MCs AM Early Morning, Original Super Legend, Vic Spencer, and Sean Strickland - and I'd say there's enough on here to keep you going for a while. Plus, the psychedelic instrumentals are a blast too - I'd be surprised if you didn't find this one to be a hit!

There are also a few other tracks that are just as solid, but don't make it onto the main tracklist. For example, "The Wager" by DJ Q Money is a dope hip hop track with some really cool vibes from the producers and the rappers.

The rap world has a new problem: a divide between artists, labels, and music industry insiders over the role of mixtapes in music sales. This schism is taking shape as the industry tries to stanch the decline in album sales, for which many blame piracy. On one side, label executives and some artists argue that mixtapes undermine sales by promoting giveaway items instead of official label-distributed albums, and this is a big reason why the RIAA cracked down on them.
